ABOUT THE BSO Registry
Coreada Kelly's description from discussion on ModelArabians
July/August 1999 DHR
Following discussion on ModelArabians, AMAHA now offers registration for BSOs - blood stock only.
BSO stands for Blood Stock Only. You might also see it abbreviated as DO, for Details Only. It is a "horse" that exists only on paper - a pedigree that you have worked out but don't have a model for. Some people use them in their breeding programs, usually as older horses, so they can have 20-year-old horses in the breeding bam but aren't showing the model as a 20 year old under saddle.
They can also be identifications, or IDs, waiting for a body. This is what ALL of my BSOs are. Say, for instance, you've got a great stallion and mare, and you have the perfect foal from them in mind. You know the name, the color, everything. But you don't want to assign this great ID to just any mold.
You want the right one (or in my case, you want to customize the right one) to represent this horse. So the horse exists on paper as BSO until you get the right model for it. Some BSOs, though, are never intended to have a body at all. It just depends on what works for you in your breeding program.
To register your BSOs with AMAHA, send in the same info as you would for a model, except for the bits about OF, make and mold, etc. This way you can reserve the name you've been using, particularly if you ever decide to create of commission a model to assign that ID. (It's kind of like real Thoroughbred racing - you can reserve the name of a foal not yet born by registering it.)
You will receive a BSO number, and should you ever get a model for one of your BSO IDs, then that model will be moved to the regular registry list and assigned the next number in line.
