Once again, I’m pleased to have the honor of judging one of our Point Only Shows, and once again, I was delighted with the beauty and quality of the Arabians and half-Arabians in our Club. There were many, many models that I would have loved to take home! Of course, that’s impossible, sooooo, some of you will instead be “hit up” with requests to use your horses in my “breeding program.” Thank you for the opportunity to see and enjoy your wonderful Arabians!
Meanwhile, a few general observations: When you get your photos back, please take a few moments to check the backs of your photos before sending them on to the next judge. There were many horses entered in wrong classes; there were even some photos where the “classlist” was totally blank. I took the liberty of putting yellow post-it notes on those photo-backs where a change is in order. :-)

Note: The Showmanship class isn’t just about looking pretty! The majority of halters in these classes either lacked throatlatches or had throatlatches that were poorly fitted, and in "real life", would have failed to keep the halter on the horse in a crisis situation (which, had the horse gotten loose, would certainly have become one!) Remember: In real life, one should be able to get about four -- not forty, or a hundred -- fingers (not hands) between the throatlatch and the throat, just behind the jaw, for maximum control. Despite the ads in magazines such as Arabian Horse World, throatlatches should not be dangling loosely, or flapping half-way down the cheek (think: sticky wax, if your model’s head is in a position where you’re fighting with gravity!). Entries with these problems were marked down accordingly. The only exception to this issue is if a horse is being shown in a native (not Hollywood native) style halter, i.e., true Egyptian style, in which case this should be noted on the photo back.

A note about bays and chestnuts: A bay is any shade of brown with black points, that is, a black mane, tail, and legs (i.e., knees). A horse that is brown with a black mane and tail but body-colored (brown) legs is a chestnut, not a bay. Likewise, a brown horse with dark knees/legs and a light-colored mane and tail is also not a bay, but most likely a chestnut, or even an early-stage grey, as some greys start going "silvery" in their manes and tails first -- such should be noted on the photo back.. Please check your photo backs and correct accordingly. :-)

A quick note: Many of you had tack that was every bit as lovely as the models wearing it. As I was ooh-ing and aah-ing over the tack, I would eagerly turn the photos over, hoping to see who the tackmaker was -- only to find that the information was missing. Part of the fun of holding a photo show is to drool over others’ collections, and to see the work produced by various artists -- tackmakers included. Perhaps those of you who haven’t credited your tackmakers on the photo backs might do so, so that future judges may have their curiosity satisfied? :-)
